Two cases were registered by police yesterday against BJP Tamil Nadu unit secretary H Raja, MLA, on the charge of making an "inflammatory and provocative speech" at a public meeting organised in connection with Ganesh Chathurthy at Karaikudi on September 20 last.
Police said Raja had also been charged with "hurting and offending religious sentiments" through his speech. The cases have been registered by Sivaganga district police.
Reacting to the filing of the cases, Raja told reporters that he stood by whatever he had spoken at the meeting and accused the AIADMK government of being 'vindictive'.
"Registering the cases against me shows the vindictive nature of the ruling AIADMK's supremo Jayalalithaa. It is another solid example of vindictiveness," he said.
Asked why the cases had been registered after over two months, police said, "We have got orders from the Government to register the cases. We can't comment."
Raja has been publicly stating that the police had been told to look out for cases against him ever since he protested in the state assembly last month against the arrest of Kanchi seer Jayendra Saraswathi.
