Dalit leaders condemn pontiff's arrest

Sunnetwork Online News

Chennai, Dec 23 - A group of Dalit leaders belonging to various Dalit organisations have condemned the arrest of Kanchi seer Jayendra Saraswathi and said they propose to hold a demonstration here on January 5 in this regard.

The leaders told reporters here today that they also proposed to present a memorandum to the Tamil Nadu Governor on the issue on the same day of the demonstration.

The leaders included 'Tada' Periyasamy of the BJP, Viswanathan Kakkan of Ambedkar Makkal Sabai (Ambedkar People's Organisation), 'Puratchi' Kavi Dasan of Makkal Kazhagam and Arjan Sampath of Hindu Makkal Katchi.

Alleging "political interference" in the arrest of the seer, the leaders demanded shifting of the case out of the state and a probe by the CBI. They sought to know why Rs 5 lakh was given to the family of temple official Sankararaman, when similar compensation was not granted to the families of a number of Dalit leaders who were killed in the past.

They said the seer, breaking away from certain traditions, had done yeoman service to the cause of Dalits and by his arrest some of the good works done by him had been stopped. This only indicated that the government was against the Dalits, they claimed.
