‘Seer concerned over tragedy’

VELLORE: The arrested Kanchi Sankaracharya has expressed deep anguish over the devastation caused by the tidal waves, according to VHP international vice-president S Vedhantham, who met the Kanchi seer at the Vellore Central Prison.

Vedhantham said that the seer recalled the help and relief measures he (the seer) rushed to the victims of the Gujarat earthquake years ago and expressed his inability to extend similar help and support to the needy people who have been affected by the calamity.

The seer wanted the people of the state to light the ‘moksha deepam’ in all temples and also pray for the departed souls to rest in peace, he said.

Vedhantham said that the seer was not aware of the motive behind the case which had been foisted against him. The seer told him that he being a sanyasi, his sole purpose was to extend social service to the needy people.

The VHP leader pointed out that the so-called investigations carried out against the Mutt were aimed at bringing discredit to the institution and the seer rather than bringing out the truth behind the murder.

He said that the seer was innocent and expressed hope that he would come out clean soon. During the briefing, counsel V Krishnaswami and the Tamil Nadu unit youth leader Veerbahahu were present.
