Dalit group to protest Seer's arrest

CHENNAI: A group of Dalit leaders on Thursday announced that a demonstration would be held on January 5 and a memorandum would be submitted to the Tamil Nadu Governor in protest against the arrest of the Kanchi Sankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi.

Addressing the media here the Dalit leaders, including BJP's 'Tada' Periyasamy, Viswanathan Kakkan of Ambedkar Makkal Sabhai, 'Puratchi' Kavi Dasan of Makkal Kazhagham and Arjan Sampath of Hindu Makkal Katchi, alleged political interference in the arrest of the Acharya.

The leaders demanded that the case be shifted out of Tamil Nadu and be handed over to the CBI. Apart from condemning the arrest of the Seer, the leaders also criticised the government compensation of Rs. 5 lakh given to the slained Varadaraja Perumal temple manager A. Sankararaman.
