Vajpayee takes up seer issue with PM

NEW DELHI: Stepping up its campaign on the Sankaracharya issue, an NDA delegation led by former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday.

During the meeting, Vajpayee accused the Tamil Nadu government of declaring an "all out war" against the Kanchi mutt and urged the PM to take up the matter with chief minister Jayalalithaa.

The delegation, including L K Advani and Sushma Swaraj, submitted a memorandum to Singh, demanding that the seer be shifted from Vellore jail and "interned in some guest house" as he is "an accused and not a criminal".

An NDA delegation is also set to raise the issue of the unequal treatment meted out to the Opposition on the floor of the House with Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Thursday.

At an evening meeting of NDA leaders held in Opposition leader L K Advani's office on Wednesday, it was decided that the delegation will meet Chatterjee on Thursday.

Vajpayee will not be part of the seven-member delegation to be led by NDA's deputy leader of Lok Sabha V K Malhotra. The delegation, will ask the Speaker to allow more time to the Opposition to take up issues.
