Kalavai: The Kanchi Mutt advocate A Shanmugam today (Jan 16, 2005) said he believed the assurance given by the Government that it would not takeover the Mutt.
"When the Government has given an assurance, definitely, we should believe it. The home secretary to Tamil Nadu Government has given an undertaking," he told reporters after meeting Kanchi Seer Jayendra Saraswathi for over an hour in Kalavai.
Yesterday, there was a rumour that the Government was going to takeover the Mutt, he said adding if that was true, it would have been malafide. But Government has given an assurance that it would not takeover the Mutt, he said.
The way in which the police investigation was proceeding gave room for apprehensions that the Government might take over the Mutt, he said adding the Mutt manager 'Pollachi' Mahadevan was summoned yesterday and was asked to produce the documents relating to the Mutt.
"Where was the need for asking these documents. They were no way connected with the cases," he said.
Asked when the chargesheet against the Kanchi Seers and other accused in the Sankararaman murder case would be filed, he said he had information that the chargesheet might be filed between January 22 and 27.
Asked whether the Seer would shift his camp from Kalavai, he replied in the negative. "If Swamiji has any such plan, he will reveal it to the media first. To my little knowledge, Swamiji has no such plans," he said.
As per the condition imposed by the Supreme Court while granting bail, the Seer would not visit Kanchi Mutt till the chargesheet was filed, he said.
