NEW DELHI, JANUARY 11: The BJP today threatened an agitation to protest the high-handedness of the Tamil Nadu government for arresting the junior Kanchi seer.

On the same platform, the party also unveiled its decision to contest on 27 seats in Bihar in the first phase of elections.

Senior leader Murli Manohar Joshi, a devout follower of the Kanchi mutt, occupied centrestage and accused the state government of vendetta. A meeting held earlier in the day and attended by senior BJP leaders Atal Behari Vajpayee, L.K. Advani, Jaswant Singh, Arun Jaitley and Rajnath Singh, under the chairmanship of Joshi, laid the roadmap for an intensive five-day agitation beginning January 15, against the decision of the Tamil Nadu government to arrest Vijayendra Saraswati.

Giving details of the argument presented by the prosecutor and the defence counsel, Joshi said the latest act was a blow to Hinduism.

Meanwhile, the VHP got into an aggressive mode and threatened to stage demonstrations and rallies across the country and demanded dismissal of the Jayalalithaa government. The VHP will also launch a week-long hanuman chalisa recital from Thursday to protest against the Tamil Nadu government’s ‘‘high-handedness’’, VHP general secretary Praveen Togadia said. ‘‘She has behaved irresponsibly even earlier, which was clear by the treatment meted out to former chief minister M. Karunanidhi,’’ he alleged.

Togadia alleged Jayalalithaa was misusing the state administration and the police for her ulterior motives.
