Kalavai: The 2500-year-long tradition of the Kanchi Mutt was broken on Tuesday when the most sacred Dhanur Masya pooja, performed in the early hours of the morning, had to be postponed to the night, with both the seers under detention.

The pooja, which is performed between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. usually, could not be held on Tuesday as Junior Sankaracharya Vijendra Saraswathi, who was doing it in the absence of the senor pontiff, was also in jail, consequent to his arrest on January 10, mutt sources said.

Only the peetathipathis of the mutt were entitled to perform the pooja, they said. The Sankacharya performed the pooja in the night with other poojas.
